Re: Brake shoes are too big?

Thank you all for your help. Now my 353 is alive again. I started working on the left side and had to use the file quite a lot since the brake shoes didn't come together enough at the lower base. Once I got that sorted everything went in place beautifully. Then I started working on the right side th...

Re: Brake shoes are too big?

Thank you Reiner. I haven't tried to do anything to get the brakes sorted since I hurt my back. Now I am starting to feel better so next week I will hopefully be able to tackle this problem again. What you write, Reiner, is interesting. I will start by carefully comparing the old and new brake shoes...

Re: Brake shoes are too big?

Thank you Frank. I will try with bevels. The adjusting mechanisms seem to be in perfect condition. Hopefully I will be able to give it another try tomorrow. I hurt my back today so maybe I'll have to wait for a few days. I will report back when I have fitted the new brake shoes successfully. Cheers ...

Brake shoes are too big?

I have spent hours today replacing the wheel cylinders and brake shoes (Bremsbacken) on my 1986 353. No matter how I do it the new brake shoes seem to have a diameter too big. I can not put the brake drum back on. I finally left the new wheel cylinder in position and put the old brake shoes back on ...

Plastic nut on master cylinder

Hi all. Today I solved a problem with my 1986 Wartburg using an unexpected spare part. The plastic nut on top of my brake fluid container was cracked and a previous owner had ”repaired” it. I removed the sending unit, Pried off the top plastic piece, removed the plastic nut, replaced it with a plast...

Re: The brakes won't let go

Thanks Warre. The master cylinder was what I suspected when this happened. I have had a look at it now and it looks dry and nice but the rear rubber boot is totally destroyed by age. I think the master cylinder of my car is the original since 1986 so it is time to replace it anyway. I just ordered a...

The brakes won't let go

Guten Abend. After a summer with no problems I now have a problem with my Wartburg. (353 scheibenbremsen 1986). Last weekend I went to an oldtimer meeting and on my way home I stopped for a quick visit at a supermarket. When I left the supermarket I felt nothing strange but after a few hundred meter...

Thank you for all answers. So far I have checked the ground cable on the gearbox and the smaller one close to the battery. I have removed a lot of cables from a black connector behind the speedometer and a big white socket under the mäusekino. (I couldn't find the yellow socket). Nothing has changed...

Temperature - electric?

A strange phenomenon has showed up on my 353. When I drive it I always have the headlights turned on. The temperature varies from lower green LED, both LEDs and the upper green LED until I use more electricity. If I turn the windshield wipers on, if I use the turn signals or press down the brake ped...

Thanks for the answer rally 311. Today my mailman delivered a new 180mm clutch so now it is just up to me to get the old one replaced. I have never removed a Wartburg motor before but it seems to be pretty straight forward when looking under the bonnet.

Slipping clutch

After close to 1000 km's in my "new" Wartburg the first real problem has occurred. The clutch/kupplung has started slipping. I checked for new parts on ebay but there seems to be at least two variations: 180/200 millimeter diameter. Does anyone know which diameter would fit my 1986 Wartburg?

My blue high beam (fernscheinwerfer) control lamp is not working. I put my hand up behind the dashboard and found a loose cable so I guess it is quite obvious what is causing this problem.
